Director of Discipleship and Outreach

Work Hours: Full-time, salaried position

Job Objective: Wesley United Methodist Church is located in downtown Muscatine, IA. We, as a church,
strive to transform lives through hands-on ministry with children and families in need. The Director of
Discipleship role is to coordinate Christian Education from the young child to senior adult to aid in faith
development; coordinate community outreach programs & events that align with the vision of Wesley;
train and grow ministry teams in the area of Sunday school (child, youth, young adult, adult, and senior
adult) and community outreach; collaborate with staff on projects within the church.

Specific List of Responsibilities
● Coordinate Sunday School/small group opportunities for children, youth, young adults, adults,
and senior adults through curriculum selection, volunteer development, advertisement, and
● Facilitate Christian Education Committee
● Coordinate Vacation Bible School curriculum, volunteers, materials
● Vision with pastor, staff, and ministry teams to facilitate church-wide studies/activities/events to
support faith development
● Manage and maintain the budget for both Christian Education and Community Outreach events
● Maintain a social media and website presence to communicate, advertise, and tell the story of
ministries at Wesley
● Build relationships with Wesley families
● Ensure ministries support the vision of Wesley
● Coordinate community outreach events & opportunities that allow parishioners to transform
● Network with community leaders and partner organizations to ensure success in outreach and
service ministries
● Coordinate partnership with Franklin Elementary School by providing tutoring opportunities and
other needs that arise
● Tell the story of outreach ministry happening at Wesley to support continued involvement

● A personal relationship with Christ and a commitment to lifelong learning to strengthen his/her
faith and to grow faith in others
● Love for the church, its vision, and the community
● Bachelor’s Degree in a related field
● Experience leading Sunday school, small groups, or other faith formation groups
● Excellent written & verbal communication skills
● Enjoy working as a team member and building strong relationships with co-workers, ministry
teams, and the congregation
● Resourceful and creative in implementing programs and engaging the congregation
● Strong leadership and organizational skills
● Working knowledge of social media and website management
