Experiencing Grace

Exploring Truth

Palm/Passion Sunday

Luke 19:28-40 & Luke 23:1-49

This Sunday is Palm Sunday, when we remember Jesus’ Triumphant Entry into Jerusalem by waving palms and singing joyous songs. However, Palm Sunday is also the beginning of Holy Week, when we remember Jesus’ betrayal, arrest, trial, suffering, and resurrection. Many people who attend Sunday morning do not, for whatever reason, attend the Holy Week services. They might miss the message of Jesus’ passion, or suffering, and go from the celebration of Palm Sunday to the larger celebration of Easter, without taking time to understand and reflect on what happened in between. For that reason, Palm Sunday often includes a remembrance of the Passion.

Our service this Sunday will begin with the Liturgy of the Palms and the waving of our palm branches, in celebration of Jesus’ Triumphal Entry. Then, the service will take a dramatic shift to the Liturgy of the Passion and a reading of the Crucifixion story.

There will be no sermon this week. Instead, I invite you to reflect upon the stark realities of Holy Week and prepare your hearts to celebrate the Resurrection on Easter.

We have had ONLY SEVEN people tell us that they read the Wesley Word regularly. If you have NOT ALREADY taken the survey, please take it here.

Expressing Love: Family/Mission Activity

Donkey Races-If you have enough people in your family, pair people up so one is the donkey and one is the rider and then have races through your house to see who can get to the finish line (without losing their rider) first. You can also use stuffed animals instead of people as the “rider” and see who can go the furthest or fastest without losing their “rider”. Have fun!

Then talk about when Jesus rode into Jerusalem on a donkey and the people shouted praises. They knew Jesus was the Messiah they had been waiting for. You may also choose to make palm branches and write praises for Jesus (ex: Hosanna! Blessed is He! Hallelujah!) and have a little parade!
